The creation of Mercy Housing East was
made possible by a unique collaboration between two Regional Communities of the
Sisters of Mercy of the Americas -- the Sisters of Mercy Regional Community of North Carolina
and the Sisters of Mercy Regional Community of Baltimore -- in conjunction with Mercy Housing, Inc., Denver, Colorado.
Mercy Housing East plans to develop multi-family, senior and special needs
housing in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia. The regional
headquarters is located in Atlanta, Georgia, with satellite offices located in
Belmont, NC, and Savannah, Georg ia.Founded in 1981, the Mercy Housing System is a national, not-for-profit housing development and management organization headquartered in Denver, Colorado. The mission of Mercy Housing East is to create and strengthen healthy communities through the provision of quality, affordable, service-enriched housing for individuals and families who are economically poor. Although this property, Mercy Place, as seen in an architectural rendering at left, is a part of Mercy Housing East, many other properties in the Mercy Housing portfolio, serve low-income families, people with HIV/AIDS, senior citizens, people who were homeless and people with mental and physical impairments. Above, at right, you can see an exterior view of Mercy Place, a 40-unit affordable housing facility for qualified seniors which is located in Belmont, NC. The facility, built on property belonging to the Sisters of Mercy Regional Community of North Carolina was made available in a long-term, low-cost lease arrangement, opened in March 2005. Mercy Place was developed utilizing a $3.3 million HUD grant and grant monies from the Sisters of Mercy of North Carolina Foundation, Inc. Mercy Housing System Regional Development Corporations include: Mercy Charities Housing California, Intercommunity Housing, Mercy Housing Idaho, Merced Housing Texas, Mercy Housing Midwest, Mercy Housing Southwest, and Mercy Housing Michigan.
