Sisters of Mercy of North Carolina History

Since the first three Sisters, Mary Charles Curtin, Mary Baptist Sheehan and Mary Augustine Kent, arrived in Wilmington, NC, to found the Academy of the Incarnation, the Sisters of Mercy of the Regional Community of North Carolina has attempted to establish high quality spiritual, educational and healthcare standards through their various ministries.

Generations of these dedicated early women religious founded two early hospitals, Mercy Hospital in Charlotte, NC, and St. Joseph's Sanitarium, later known as St. Joseph's Hospital in Asheville, NC.

One of the most defining elements of their educational ministry in Belmont was Sacred Heart College. Although it has closed, its alumni remain close to the hearts of these dedicated women religious. For details on upcoming events that invite former students to the campus, please visit the Sacred Heart College page.

Most former students would have a difficult time recognizing the Sisters of Mercy campus these days. To show you all the changes, check out our Virtual Tour or if you just want to know how to locate our campus, see our Directions page.
